Problems Solved

The global shipping industry is a fairly large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, as 3.8% to 5% of these global emissions are caused by the movement of cargo vessels (SOURCE IMO) The shipping industry is inefficient when it comes to the handling of these vessels in and between ports, as 30% of all container cargo vessel moves get delayed (SOURCE MCK). Due to the highly integrated nature of the logistic supply chain about 90% of these delays cascade through the chain wasting more time, money, fuel and emissions. When ports, shippers, agencies and terminals would tackle this problem together, across the different regions, trades and port communities a global industry saving potential of 125 Bn $ could be realized (SOURCE MCK). The root cause for this inefficiency lies in behavior of parties involved in port calls, due to miscommunication, lack of data sharing and standards; and with the current outdated (40 yr old) charter party clauses in ocean freight contracts, in which it is standard to require the vessel to be at the next port as soon as possible, instead of just-in-time. With 450.000 container portcalls, and over 500.000 liquid bulk portcalls annually, these inefficiencies provide a clear opportunity for shipping companies to improve their bottom line and reduce their environmental footprint significantly by improving the communication with the port communities in the ports they call Just in Time: a modest 10% speed reduction to arrive Just in Time instead of anchoring, may decrease up to 30% CO2 emissions. Therefore unlocking the plannings of the port community parties and informing vessel operators in advance leads to Just in Time sailing and thus emission reduction.
